Chief government Architect
The position of Chief Government Architect is intended to stimulate the quality of architecture in the Netherlands, not only where it concerns the central government of the Netherlands, but also beyond. In carrying out his task, the Chief Government Architect assumes an independent position.
The Chief Government Architect advises the government on architectural policy and government housing. The Chief Government Architect is a member of the Board of Government Advisors. Liesbeth van der Pol is the Chief Government Architect since 15 August 2008.

Policy on architecture
The national government has been implementing architectural policy since 1991. The Ministries involved in architectural policy papers from 1991-2005 were: Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), Education, Culture and Science (OCW), Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), Transport, Public Works and Water Management (VenW) and Economic Affairs (EZ).

Guaranteeing quality in government housing
The Rijksgebouwendienst (Rgd) handles housing for government ministries and national agencies, the High Councils of State, independent administrative bodies and international organisations. The nearly two thousand buildings it manages are distributed throughout the country, often at top locations in inner cities.

Proposal of architects
The Chief Government Architect is responsible for the urban positioning, architectonic quality and monumental maintenance of government buildings and proposes architects for all accommodation projects realised under the auspices of the Rijksgebouwendienst.
